The summer of 2016 marks our sixteenth year at the Cove Cafe’. In 2001 we first opened our little cafe. We worked diligently to make it a friendly, cozy, family run eatery providing great food, some Perkins Cove history and a place where everyone felt welcome. We feel that we succeeded.
A few years later we added to our business repertoire by opening the Cove Corner Shoppe across the street. Although it was lucrative, it was extremely time consuming. In 2014 we made the decision to close the doors because we needed to help out with the family business, The Blue Water Inn. In keeping with our restaurant roots and trying to maintain the family business, we worked tirelessly that summer at the cafe and the BWI. Tragically the Blue Water Inn was destroyed by fire on April 28th 2015.
So we are back to the simplicity we first started with and we love it!
If you are one of our wonderful returning customers, you will notice that not much changes over the years. We maintain our seasoned, faithful staff working to continue their education, make a better life for themselves and their families and just to have a little fun.
Jenn has been with us since the beginning and despite teaching full time and raising her boys, she still likes to get in a few shifts here and there. Louise, although busy raising her two beautiful children, is ever so dependable and always a pleasure to have on board. Alyssia just can’t stay away either. Instead of Hawaii over the winter, she stayed in Ogunquit. Like Louise, she is here spring, summer and fall. They take over while most of us return to our various schools. Rachel continues to work hard during the summer to pay for her college education. If she continues to follow the path of a career in education you will likely see her every year to subsidized that income. That happens to be what Mel is doing! Mel has just completed her first year of teaching and now wedding bells are in her future! Cheryl is also back again this year. She and Heidi continue the race of who can have the most grandchildren! Cheryl is winning. Our Kellee has moved away and begun a career, but she may make an occasional guest waitress appearance just because she can’t stay away. She loves the Cove Cafe’ customers as much as they love her. To fill all of the hours that Kellee put in last year we have added Alexa and Elyse. Alexa is a local and is currently studying at UNH. Elyse, also a college student, works full time in the evening and will be filling in at the cafe as needed. Emma is another new addition. She will be a sophomore at Saint Thomas Aquinas, and this is her first job.
You will probably see a lot less of Jen this summer because she is extremely busy with her three children. She and Kevin both worked hard teaching all winter and also want to have some time with their children Lilla, Virginia and Colin. We still expect Kevin to put some time in though, so Heidi, (Nee Nee) can have time with the kids as well.
Nate and Ashley will make an appearance now and then with our grandson, William. They are both stationed in Norfolk, Virginia and are expecting another child in November.
The smiling face you see behind the line with Jeb is Carlton. He has been with us for a long time and we so appreciate his hard work, passion and commitment to the Cove Cafe’. Derek is returning to help out in the kitchen and Orville will be stepping in on Derek’s days off. Together we will continue to work hard to provide you with a wonderful dining experience, but when we close the door in the afternoon we will be enjoying life and family! We hope you do the same!
